Our Community: Andrew Cornish Takes on 70km Lake Geneva Swim

This September, our Andrew Cornish will attempt one of the most demanding challenges in open-water swimming: a solo 70km crossing of Lake Geneva. His goal is to raise funds for the medical charity Mercy Ships, which delivers free, life-changing surgery and healthcare training in some of the world’s poorest regions.

From English Channel to Lake Geneva

In July, 2025, Andrew completed the legendary English Channel swim, battling gruelling force 6 winds, rough seas, and strong currents. Despite the conditions, he successfully covered the 35km solo crossing, proving both his resilience and determination.

That achievement had been a long time in the making. Andrew’s Channel attempt was originally scheduled for September 2024, but weather disruptions forced him to postpone. His eventual success marked a major milestone in his career as an endurance swimmer — and set the stage for his next extraordinary goal: the Lake Geneva Signature Swim.

The Lake Geneva Signature Swim

Known as one of the toughest swims in the world, the Lake Geneva Signature Swim spans the entire length of Western Europe’s largest lake, starting at Chillon Castle in Veytaux and ending at Bains des Pâquis in Geneva.

At nearly twice the distance of the English Channel, the crossing demands immense physical and mental strength. Swimmers must contend with icy water, sudden alpine weather changes, and hours of swimming through the night. Fewer than 20 people in history have ever completed the solo swim. If Andrew succeeds, he will be among the youngest athletes ever to conquer Lake Geneva.

"This is going to be one of the toughest things I have ever done," Andrew said. "But knowing it will help Mercy Ships makes every hour of training worth it."

Why Mercy Ships?

"Globally, more than five billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgery. Mercy Ships is working to change that. Since its founding in 1978, the organization has:

  • Served in 70+ countries
  • Delivered healthcare services worth over £1 billion
  • Provided care for 2.5 million people
  • Trained 38,000+ local health professionals

By raising funds through this swim, Andrew will support Mercy Ships' mission to expand access to surgery and build stronger medical systems in sub-Saharan Africa."

Swim Details and How to Support

Andrew's Lake Geneva crossing is scheduled for September 8, 2025. He expects the swim to take around 25 hours. In line with marathon swimming rules, he will wear only a standard swimsuit, cap, and goggles, with no wetsuit and no contact with his support boat until the finish.
