Key Container Shipping Data Trends: October 2025

As 2025 nears its end, Alphaliner data reveals significant shifts within the global container shipping industry. From the expanding dominance of Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS) to fleet milestones among major carriers, the industry continues to evolve at pace.

Ultra Large Container Ships Now Top Fleet Segment in Market Share

Alphaliner’s early-year projections are materializing: Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS) — vessels above 15,000 TEU — have overtaken the 5,1000-10,000 TEU segment in total market capacity.

By the end of 2025, the ULCS segment is expected to exceed 8.3 million TEU, supported by newbuild deliveries adding close to 0.9 million TEU this year, with another 0.2 million TEU to come before year-end.

Container Ship Fleet Breakdown by capacity

There are currently 432 ULCS vessels in service, collectively accounting for more than 8 million TEU. Meanwhile, the former top category of Container Ships between 5,100 and 10,000 TEU comprise a slightly smaller 8.1 million TEU across about 1,100 ships. Their capacity has grown by only 0.3 million TEU in 2025, underscoring the industry’s preference for larger, more efficient vessels.

Idle Fleet Remains Stable Despite Rate Pressure

Despite freight rate volatility and the seasonal lull following China’s Golden Week, the commercially idle fleet remains remarkably low, standing at 0.9% of total global capacity (32.7 million TEU).

Although this marks the highest idle ratio in a year, Alphaliner considers the liner sector “fully employed”, with no structural idling. As of early October, the idle fleet comprised 91 ships, representing a modest capacity increase of 7,155 TEU over two weeks.

Interestingly, much of the recent fleet inactivity stems not from weak demand but from increased drydocking activity. The share of tonnage tied up in shipyards for maintenance, retrofits, or conversions rose to 2.1% of total capacity, up from 1.6% in September.

HMM Joins the One-Million-TEU Club

South Korea’s leading ocean carrier, HMM, has surpassed 1 million TEU of operated capacity for the first time — a major milestone that cements its position as the world’s eighth-largest carrier.

This achievement caps a five-year expansion program that doubled HMM’s fleet. The journey began in 2020 with the HMM ALGECIRAS, the first of twelve 24,000-TEU Megamax vessels. Subsequent deliveries included eight 16,000-TEU “NPX” ships in 2021, followed by a mix of 13,000- and 9,000-TEU units in 2024–2025.

HMM Container Ship Fleet Growth

The milestone vessel was the 10,010-TEU SEASPAN BRIGHTNESS, newly added to the Far East–India–Mediterranean service. Built domestically, as with HMM’s entire newbuilding program, the carrier’s strategy reflects a commitment to supporting South Korea’s shipbuilding industry.

Future fleet growth is already in the pipeline, with seventeen additional ships scheduled for delivery through 2029 from leading Korean yards including Hyundai Samho, Hanwha Ocean, and Hyundai Heavy Industries.
