Key Container Shipping Data Trends: August 2025

In August, the global Container Shipping industry continued experiencing significant transformations, with fleet expansions, minimal idle capacity, and a surge in orders for alternative-fueled Container Ships.

Let's explore the latest developments together.

MSC Leads Global Container Shipping with 6.8 MTEU Capacity

As of mid-August 2025, MSC operates over 930 vessels, totaling 6.76 million TEU (MTEU). MSC’s owned fleet alone exceeds 4 MTEU, making it the largest container shipping company in the world with a 20.7% market share of the global container ship fleet.

The carrier continues to expand its footprint with more than 2.2 MTEU in capacity on order, ranking third in orderbook-to-existing-fleet ratios among top container shipping lines.

Other major carriers like Maersk (4.6 MTEU) and COSCO (3.4 MTEU) are also increasing their capacity, while CMA CGM now operates a fleet exceeding 4 MTEU. Overall, the global fully cellular container fleet approached 32.5 MTEU, with the top 10 carriers controlling 84.6% of this capacity.

Global Idle Container Fleet Remains Historically Low

Despite recent declines in spot freight rates, the global idle container fleet remains near record lows, at just 0.5% of total liner capacity. According to Alphaliner’s mid-August survey, the commercially idle fleet increased by only 28,000 TEU over two weeks.

Container Ship Idle Fleet

This demonstrates that the container shipping industry is operating at full employment, with most idle vessels temporarily out of service for operational reasons like awaiting assignments or post-drydock re-entry.

Geopolitical disruptions, such as U.S. OFAC sanctions, account for much of the limited idling rather than commercial decisions. Although demand absorption remains high, particularly in the Transpacific shipping market, there is potential for excess tonnage to emerge once temporary disruptions ease.

Record-Breaking Container Ship Orderbook Surpasses 10 MTEU

The global container ship orderbook is now estimated between 9.8 MTEU and 10.4 MTEU, marking an all-time high. Alphaliner reports the orderbook at 9.95 MTEU, meaning any significant new order will surpass the 10 MTEU milestone.

This expansion reflects both fleet modernization and the push for sustainable shipping solutions. The newbuilding pipeline exceeded the previous record of 7.12 MTEU in 2008, reaching 7.19 MTEU in July 2022. Since mid-2024, carriers and non-operating owners have added nearly 600 newbuildings, equating to a net orderbook addition of approximately 2.8 MTEU.

With a global fleet averaging 13.7 years in age, carriers are prioritizing fuel-efficient, alternative-fueled container ships. Aging mid-sized vessels are being replaced, aligning with the shipping industry’s goals to reduce emissions per TEU-mile.

Slow steaming remains a critical strategy to improve energy efficiency, while next-generation green vessels powered by alternative fuels dominate new orders. These efforts position the industry to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and decarbonization targets.
